Abstract:
A new classification of periodontal diseases and conditions was introduced recently, largely inspired by a system used in oncology, and is based on a two-vector scheme defined by staging and grading. Staging is largely dependent upon the severity of periodontitis at presentation, also accounting for tooth loss due to periodontitis, as well as on the complexity of disease management. Grading provides supplemental information about additional biological features of the disease including a history-based analysis of the rate of periodontitis progression; assessment of the risk for further progression; expected outcomes of treatment; and assessment of the probability that the disease or its treatment may negatively affect the general health of the patient.
The webinar will describe the principles of the classification, will exemplify its use through presentation of relevant clinical cases, and will also highlight “grey zones” that may pose potential diagnostic challenges.
