The scope of the lecture includes aspects of orthodontic procedures, which result in the generation of aerosol. Emphasis is placed on the formulation and constituent components of aerosol, which include airborne bacteria/viruses and particulates arising from the grinding of enamel and dental composites. The multifaceted effects of this mixture of dissimilar entities involve:
- hazards associated with the production of PM 2.5 aerosol particles for the respiratory function, which might inflict silicosis;
- the contamination of the operatory with bacteria, which stay airborne for extended periods of time;
- the production of potentially endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC) with direct effects on the hormonal homeostasis owing to the release of bisphenol A during grinding of the composite resins with rotary instruments.
The phenomena accompanying the placement and removal of composite resins and aligner attachments are reviewed and misconceptions or traditional beliefs are clarified. Along with the description of the effects induced and their potential health impact, a brief summary of evidence-based and empirically-derived guidelines to limit the undesirable effects associated with the use of rotary instruments in a dental setting is provided. To this end, a wide array of materials, processes, and apparatuses focusing on reducing, controlling or negating the potential hazardous effects relating to the infectious nature or biohazardous action of aerosol is presented.
Prof. Theodore Eliades DDS, MS, Dr Med Sci, PhD, DSc, FIMMM, FRSC, FInstP
Theodore Eliades is Professor and Director of the Clinic of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, as well as Director of Research, and Interim Director of the Institute of Oral Biology at the Center of Dental Medicine, University of Zurich. He graduated from the School of Dentistry, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and completed his Orthodontic residency at the Ohio State University. He earned a Master of Science degree from Ohio State, a doctorate in medical sciences from the University of Athens, School of Medicine, a PhD in Biomaterials from the University of Manchester, where he was awarded a DSc degree.
His research has generated 250 papers in pubmed listed journals and 50 book chapters, which have received over 10,000 citations and an h index of 55 (google scholar). He has edited 13 textbooks published by major houses, some of which translated into 5 languages. He has co-supervised and/or examined 50 doctorate and Master theses at Universities from 7 countries on 4 continents, and is an elected Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the Institute of Physics (UK). Prof. Eliades has been Visiting Professor at King’s College London, affiliated with institutions in the US and Europe (Texas-Houston, Marquette, Manchester and Bonn), and has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Biomechanics, Associate Editor of the European Journal of Orthodontics, the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and the Progress in Orthodontics. He was the 2015 Jan Taylor Visiting Lecturer of the Australian Foundation for Orthodontic Research and Education, and the 2018 Milton Sims Visiting Professor at the University of Adelaide. He served as a member of the task Force for harmonization of worldwide postgraduate orthodontic education of the World Federation of Orthodontists and the revised Erasmus guidelines committee for postgraduate orthodontic education in Europe (NEBEOP). Work under his supervision has received the Bengt Magnuson prize of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry, the FEO award of the European Federation of Orthodontists, and thrice the WJB Houston research poster award of the European Orthodontic Society.
The area of his expertise include aspects of materials science relevant to clinical application of materials and treatment efficiency, retrieval analysis of biomaterials, biological properties of materials, dental hard tissues and bonding, and mechanics of materials and tissues. Since 2002 he manages the biomaterials network (www.orthodontic-biomaterials.ch) a research initiative comprised of European Universities and research centers.
