ABSTRACT
More than one billion people worldwide suffered a dental injury within 20 years. Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) are the fifth most frequent injury of the human body with high incidence in youngsters and teenagers (25%).
Until recently, TDIs was classified and recorded according to a variety of factors and different methods that complicated their accurate diagnosis and documentation leading to a mismanagement of these injuries and in differ medico-legal problems and most importantly reducing quality of life for these patients.
To be able to treat appropriately any type of injury/disease we need to have an accurate diagnosis which in turn is based on an accurate and clear definition of the injury. In February 2022, almost two years after Andreasen’s and Glendor’s death, the inclusion of the Andreasen TDIs classification within the 11th Revision of International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) system was finally accepted and implemented by the World Health Organization (WHO). Consequently, a worldwide systematic classification and registration of TDIs is available based on which a proper diagnosis, study and treatment can be performed. The International Classification of Diseases provides a common language that allows health professionals to share standardized information across the world which leads to a more accurate study of these types of injuries
Our review on diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of Traumatic Dental Injuries is based on the Traumatic Dental Injury classification (NA0D) by Petti, Andreasen, Glendor and Andersson.
