The 2-implant retained overdentures (2IMO) are a popular treatment for edentulous mandible. Experts’ consensus suggested that the minimum standard of care for an edentulous mandible is 2IMO. However, the standard guidelines or protocols are lacking for 2IMO regarding the positions, angulations, and diameter of the implants. This presentation collectively describes research investigating the influence of different implant diameters, positions, and angulations on stress and strain patterns, on retentive strength, and on crestal bone loss. A 3D FEA study evaluated the effect of varying implant diameters, positions, and angulations on the stresses and strain patterns in 2IMO. An in-vitro study using the 3D printed simulation evaluated the effects of varying implant positions and angulations on the retentive strength of 2IMO using the Locator attachments. And the prospective clinical study was conducted to find out the correlations between different implant positions and crestal bone loss & between inter-implant distance and the crestal bone loss in 2IMO patients with immediate loading protocols at 1-year follow up.
At the end of the presentation the participants would be able to:
1. understand the stress and strain patterns of 2IMO with varying implant positions and angulations
2. understand the retentive strength of 2IMO with varying implant positions and angulations
3. appraise the correlation of implant positions and crestal bone loss in 2IMO.
